I hate coming inside in the middle of the day and turning on lights. Well, no more will I be doing that!

  • The attic was a mess even before cutting holes in the roof!
  • The position was chosen so that when the north wall was sloped back at 50 degrees, the light well would reach far into the room.
  • It was a bit scary cutting holes in the roof, but no guts, no glory!
  • A flashing kit was available, but I saved a bunch of money by fabricating the flashing from a roll of aluminum.
  • The south wall comes straight down from the skylight.
  • Jan is measuring in preparation for cutting a 2'x4' for the south wall of the light well.
  • The completed light well framing.
  • Completed light well framing for both skylights.
  • Outside view of the two skylights.
  • Poking holes in the ceiling was nearly as traumatic as poking them in the roof. Carol kept the dust down.
  • As soon as we poked holes in the ceiling, it got very cold and snow fell -- big heating bills this winter!
  • Kitchen light well from below, with Carol cleaning up yet again.
  • Finally, the drywall is up! We re-used the part that we cut out, which saved buying an entire extra sheet.
  • Carol taped the drywall in preparation for mudding.

  • Part of this project was to upgrade the lighting. We used 12 volt halogens clipped to bare copper wire, supported by blocks of wood, made from oak flooring that was left over from the house we left in Oregon.
  • Carol strips wires that will be used for the hanging halogen lights.
  • Carol cuts a strip of aluminum flashing (left over from the skylight mounting) for the transformer housing.
  • A single pop rivet makes a loop out of the flashing to form the sidewall of the transformer housing.
  • The transformer housing is complete with a standard ceiling finish box cover.
  • The cable is hung and the lights are strung!
  • The halogen lights provide eye-drawing pools of light wherever we need them.
  • Skylights are finished, textured, and painted, and the lights are in place and working!
