Carbon dioxide is a colorless, odorless gas. It traps heat in the atmosphere by allowing short wave energy in, which is absorbed by the earth and re-radiated as long wave energy, which the carbon dioxide traps. Thus, increasing amounts of carbon dioxide cause the earth to warm.
