Permaculture, as described in Creating a Life Together (page 143) is: A set of techniques and principles for designing sustainable human settlements, with plants, animals, and buildings--especially the relationships between them.

As defined by David Holmgren in Permaculture: Principles & Pathways Beyond Sustainability, permaculture uses three ethics and twelve principles to design self-generative systems that can be continued sustainably.
