Need

The newer house lacks a useful renewable heating system. The fireplace insert has limited capacity and a proper hearth, and will not heat the downstairs effectively.

Description

The simplest wood heating system is to install a wood stove. It should be at the lowest point in the house, to take advantage of convection. It must be installed safely and to code.

Goal or deliverable

  1. New, high-efficiency woodstove installed in the Big Room on the west wall, including:
    1. proper hearth to code,
    2. insulated, enclosed chimney on outside of house.
  2. Wood delivery closet through the west wall.
  3. Vents through to one or more upstairs bedrooms.
  4. Optional "heat dam" vertical blinds across entry of Big Room.
  5. Ceiling fans:
    1. In Big Room
    2. In living room

Timeline, schedule, or end date

Ideally, installed, inspected, tested, refined as needed, and operating before the 2008/2009 heating season.

Plan

generally, a numbered list of tasks, performed in order, that will together accomplish the project's goals or deliverables

  1. the first thing we do is kill all the lawyers
  2. then clean up the mess
  3. then create something new that replaces the lawyers
  4. then sit around and complain about the replacement
  5. repeat steps above, as necessary

Financial budget

how much money will be needed, possibly high-low bracketed and detailed, or a complete guess (try to indicate how firm a guess it is!)

Labor budget

how many people are needed for how long, including specific people or specific skill-sets

  • electrician: 20 hours
